The audit crisis gripping local government could get worse before it gets better, according to an MP investigating the issue.
Clive Betts, chair of the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee, which is currently carrying out an inquiry into local audit, told The MJ: ‘The process isn’t working very well, given the astounding number of audits outstanding.
‘We have to find a way of getting through the backlog.’
Although Mr Betts said his committee did not yet have a view on the possibility of issuing qualified opinions on overdue accounts, he added: ‘What’s the point of having pristine audits that are five years old?’
