The mayor of South Yorkshire has welcomed the news that South Yorkshire is set to become the new home of a planned £1.5bn Small Modular Reactor (SMR) factory.
Holtec Britain, which has been working at Sizewell B for over 15 years, evaluated 13 locations that responded to a call for interest before choosing South Yorkshire.
It is estimated the factory will provide £1.5bn in gross value added (GVA) to the economy and could potentially create hundreds of jobs.
Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire’s Mayor, said: ‘This is a stunning success for South Yorkshire. Holtec’s decision to choose South Yorkshire as the home of its new SMR factory cements our place as the natural home for emerging clean energy sectors.’
Gareth Thomas, director of Holtec Britain, reported: ‘Holtec Britain was impressed by the resounding interest in our new SMR factory across the UK and the strong support received by the local authorities during our engagements. However, after a rigorous process, South Yorkshire was finally selected as our preferred location.’
