Birmingham City Council has begun asking employees if they would like to leave as it attempts to cut costs in the face of a £760m equal pay bill.
A Mutually Agreed Resignation Scheme (MARS) was launched on Monday 21 August, with information on the scheme sent to all city council employees.
In June, the local authority revealed it would have to pay up to £760m to settle equal pay claims, and announced the following week that it was stopping all non-essential spending.
A council spokesperson said: ‘As part of the council’s budgetary savings plan for this financial year, MARS is a voluntary scheme open for employees to apply.
‘During this period and beyond, our focus continues to be on delivering high-quality services that our city's residents and communities deserve.’
Birmingham has not revealed further details of the scheme or said how much it aims to save.
