Reforms see 800,000 drop off electoral register

Around 800,000 people have dropped off the electoral register since the move to individual electoral registration (IER), according to figures from the Labour Party.

The shadow minister for electoral registration, Gloria De Piero, said the figures show 1.8% of voters have left the register since the move to IER. Ms De Piero said the drop-off had been particularly high in areas with a large proportion of students.

Ms De Piero is calling for all universities and colleges to offer electoral registration when students first enrolled for courses.

A spokesman for the Cabinet Office said: ‘Students often move house every year and this can make it hard for councils to keep accurate registers.

‘That’s why, with government’s help, councils are working with universities on ways of ensuring the highest possible level of student registration.
