A 2% council tax increase to protect adult social care services is being proposed by Portsmouth City Council.
The news come after the chancellor used his spending review to say councils can increase council tax to fund adult social care services.
The council is now asking residents if they would be prepared to accept the rise of around 35p a week to fund services such as meals on wheels and residential care.
Cllr Donna Jones, leader of the council, said:’In our original budget consultation earlier this year, we asked residents about council tax and the overwhelming majority said they'd be prepared to pay more to protect vital services. Our budget proposals are therefore based on a 2% council tax increase.
‘We now need to ask whether they would be willing to accept an additional 2% increase, specifically to pay for services for elderly and vulnerable residents, and to avoid another £1.2m of cuts.
The council said a 2% rise would provide £1.5m a year.
