Rochdale Borough Council has called the police after local low-traffic neighbourhood (LTN) planters were set on fire.
The LTN planters were part of an ‘active neighbourhoods’ trial by the local authority which aims to encourage the use of public transport, walking and cycling.
However, LTNs have proved controversial in many areas.
Protestors in Oxford took to the streets in February against the city council’s introduction of LTNs and trial traffic filters, which are connected to the council’s plans to introduce 15-minute neighbourhoods.
A spokesperson for Rochdale Borough Council confirmed that the police are investigating the vandalism incident.
‘While we understand there may be some strong feelings about the active travel trial on both sides, violence, and threats will not be tolerated and the police are investigating this incident,’ they said.
‘The damage has now been cleared by the council and the active travel trial has been paused while we consider our next steps.’
