Three-quarters of MPs believe the Government should ring-fence adult social care funding for the next five years, according to the results of a poll.
A survey of MPs, conducted by the Local Government Association, revealed that 75% agree adult social care funding should be protected in the same way as NHS funding.
Of those surveyed, only 4% of MPs strongly disagreed with the idea, with 15% saying they disagreed.
Council leaders have recently warned that adult social care funding will face a £4.3bn 'black hole' by 2020.
Cllr David Sparks, Chair of the LGA, said: 'Adult social care is in crisis. We need a care system that is fit for the 21st century. It's not enough for consecutive governments to keep papering over the cracks with short term fixes.
'We urgently need a longer-term solution that puts social care on a sustainable footing. Failure to do so will deprive our elderly of the care they deserve, create additional pressure on the NHS and push other local services over the edge.'
