The Labour Party has suspended an Islington councillor who declared his support for Jeremy Corbyn in the upcoming General Election.
On Friday, councillor Phil Graham said on Facebook that Corbyn, who is standing as an independent, was the only candidate that Islington North residents ‘should be considering’ in the 4 July election.
The next day, Cllr Graham posted: ‘I have just been suspended from the Labour Party for supporting Jeremy Corbyn for election in Islington North.’
The former Labour leader announced on Friday that he was standing against the party for the Islington North seat and was then stripped of his Labour membership.
Corbyn had been suspended from Labour in October 2020 over his response to a critical report on antisemitism under his leadership, when he had said the scale of the problem had been ‘dramatically overstated’ by opponents and much of the media.
Labour has announced that Islington councillor Praful Nargund will run against Corbyn for the seat.
