Coventry City Council’s cabinet will discuss whether to accept up to £35m of government funding to develop a battery gigafactory as part a new investment zone.
The Government invited the West Midlands Combined Authority to prepare a proposal for a West Midlands Investment Zone with a focus on advanced manufacturing.
The proposed investment zone includes four sites, including the West Midlands Gigafactory at Coventry airport, which would be the UK’s largest battery gigafactory.
Coventry’s cabinet has been asked to recommend that the council accepts up to £35m in investment zone funding, including an initial £23m to deliver highways and infrastructure works at the gigafactory site.
It is hoped that the gigafactory will help boost take-up of electric vehicles, attract up to £2.5bn of private investment and create 6,000 jobs.
