Fifteen local authorities have been listed as top employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual staff.
Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers 2015 showcases the most gay-friendly places to work based on a number of key indicators and surveys of lesbian. gay and bisexual staff.
Ruth Hunt, Stonewall chief executive said: ‘Not only was this the most competitive year to date, we’re delighted to see that in just 15 years our armed forces are making real progress in supporting and developing their lesbian, gay and bisexual staff.’
Brighton & Hove City Council was rated the most gay-friendly local authority in the country, coming in 12th of the 100
The council’s lead member for LGBT issues, Cllr Phélim Mac Cafferty, said: ‘Today’s announcement sits alongside our excellent work on equality for the trans community. We are the top council in the country for combating homophobia in the classroom, so along with our cutting edge work, we are adamant that equality for our LGBT citizens is of the utmost importance. There is still much work to do.’
The London Borough of Islington, who ranked 13th in the list and was the only London authority to feature, said it was proud to climb from 66th place.
Leader of the council, Cllr Richard Watts, said: ‘Workplace equality still matters - nationally and internationally we know LGBT people continue to face bullying and discrimination.
‘I am proud of this year's rise in the rankings which reflects our efforts to create a safe, fair and inclusive workplace where strength in diversity is valued.’
