Gloucester City Council has pledged lessons will be learnt following a reprimand from a data watchdog over a Cyber attack.
The Information Commissioner said the council’s lack of monitoring hindered early detection and recovery from the ransomware attack in December 2021.
A ‘well-known criminal organisation’ attempted to extort a ransom payment after gaining access via a phishing email sent from a supplier and locking down Gloucester’s IT systems.
According to a council report, ‘almost every council system’ was rendered inaccessible and ‘most services ceased being able to function effectively’.
Some personal information may also have been stolen during the attack.
