Cardiff Council has warned residents about the potential dangers of e-cigarettes after a man died in a fire allegedly caused by the equipment.
It is believed the 62-year-old Merseyside resident had been charging his e-cigarette when it exploded and caused the blaze last week.
Initial investigations suggested the charging device might not have been one originally supplied with the e-cigarette.
Since January, nine fires involving such equipment have been reported across Merseyside.
Cardiff trading standards are now warning consumers to only purchase e-cigarettes and their associated technology from recognised vendors.
The town hall also urged residents to avoid leaving electrical items charging unattended for long periods.
Cllr Daniel De’Ath, with responsibility for consumer protection said: ‘This is important advice. People should be aware that electrical items should only be purchased from a reputable sources and that they should only be used with the original cables or chargers designed for them.
‘The tragic event in Merseyside is a warning to us all of the potential risks of misusing electrical items.’
