Plans for a multi-billion-pound data centre in the North East are a step closer to being realised after the local authority granted the proposals planning permission.
Northumberland County Council signed off on the application by QTS, a Blackstone-owned digital infrastructure company, in a move that represents an investment of up to £10bn.
According to the local authority, the data centre will deliver hundreds of long-term jobs, plus 1,200 construction jobs. In addition, it could support up to 2,700 indirect/induced jobs.
Council leader Glen Sanderson said: ‘This is a hugely significant day in Northumberland and one which will create massive benefits and opportunities across the region and the country.
‘This proud corner of Northumberland will be home to one of western Europe’s largest data hubs - a multi-billion-pound vote of confidence in our county’s future.’
