Wolverhampton City Council has scrapped its chief executive post, just a week after outgoing boss Simon Warren announced his departure following ill health.
It is expected that the decision to replace the post with a managing director role could help save the town hall up to £200,000 a year.
Earlier this year, Wolverhampton announced plans to lose 2,000 jobs as part of plans to save £123m over the next five years.
Council leader, Cllr Roger Lawrence, said: ‘We’ve taken the opportunity of the vacancy to have a look at our structures to see whether there's a way of reshaping the management of the authority to save more money.’
The news came as Pendle Borough Council announced that it too could soon abolish its chief executive post. The move came after the town hall vowed it would not be ‘sensible’ for it to share the role with neighbouring councils.
