The leader of Cardiff Council has called for an investigation into the events that led to the deaths of two teenagers and a riot on Monday night.
The two teenagers, Kyrees Sullivan (16) and Harvey Evans (15), were killed Monday evening while riding an electric bike in Ely.
A statement by South Wales Police said the collision ‘had already occurred when officers arrived’.
However, the BBC has verified CCTV footage of a police van chasing two people on an electric scooter shortly before the crash and near to where the incident took place.
A riot broke out after the accident which led to several vehicles being set alight and property being damaged. Police officers were also injured during the riot.
Cardiff Council leader, Cllr Huw Thomas, said yesterday: ‘My thoughts and deepest sympathies this morning are with the families of the young people who died in the road collision yesterday. This is a tragic event and they, and we, need to understand what happened and why.’
He continued: ‘I know the majority of people in Ely are deeply worried and concerned about the scenes last night. It's really important that a full investigation into what happened, and into how the road collision occurred, can take place immediately.’
