Hull City Council has announced that it will invest £150,000 in new electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.

The local authority has appointed SWARCO to supply, install, operate and maintain 20 new charging points.

The council has a fleet of more than 350 vehicles, 43 of which are currently fully electric.

Hull said it will install its first 50kW ‘rapid’ charger at its main Stockholm Road Depot, enabling it to charge most vehicles in around an hour.

A standard charger will also be installed at Stoneferry Bridge to support the team that maintains the nine bridges that span the River Hull.

In the city centre, 13 new chargers will replace six older versions at the Osborne Street multi-storey car park, including accessible chargers that will be easier for people with mobility issues to use.

The council’s portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways, Mark Ieronimo, said: ‘The council’s latest investment in fleet and public charging infrastructure will further prepare the city towards transitioning from petrol and diesel to zero-emission electric vehicles.

‘The council already operates one of the region’s largest fleets of fully electric vehicles and these additional chargers mean that we are on course to have most of the fleet zero-emission in the next few years.’
