Water shortages caused by the hot weather have forced two schools in East Sussex to close.

The move was made as water rationing was imposed in parts of Kent and Sussex where residents were asked to restrict usage to essential purposes such as drinking and food preparation.

Several leaks in the area were also causing interruptions to the water supply.

South East Water blamed the weather and a lack of rainfall for putting pressure on the system.

Its website said: 'Following the scorching temperatures throughout last summer in the south east, our rivers and reservoirs took longer than usual to recover and replenish.

'The significant rainfall we saw throughout winter, as well as our customers using water wisely, has helped.'

The shortages were described as 'woeful' by local Tory MP and business minister Nusrat Ghani.

Ms Ghani, who represents the Wealden constituency in East Sussex, said: 'I can't believe we are here again in Wealden with unmanned water stations running empty and no updates from South East Water.'

The East Sussex County Council website said: 'Sorry for the inconvenience this is causing we are working hard to make alternative plans.'
